The Sculpture Creation Process - Behind

"Meandering Through"

Discover behind the scenes of how this sculpture came to life.

The materials, techniques and stages involved in creating this sculpture that brought the finished work together.

Meandering Through - Sculpture by Walter Brecely, Southern Highlands

These 3 sculptures began life due to the purchase of a black glass vase from an opp shop. Once the idea of making a carapace from part of this vase started it led to 2 more sides of the vase being cut out and prepared without knowing the outcome.

With the carapaces make, each of the 3 pieces developed individually using different methods and ideas.

One using the neck section of a black glass bottle cut into lengths as the legs with a designed and cut out piece of copper sheet and an old clock spring attached to each leg to create movement.

Another used the straight section of the black glass bottle attached to titanium wires to create the legs.

While yet another piece involved silver soldering piano wires into the ends of fork tines and then silver soldering the opposing ends of the piano wires onto a shaped brass rod ring, then attached to the underside of the carapace to create a springy movement.

These three each presented individual problems to be solved even though they all started from a simple undefined idea.
