The Sculpture Creation Process - Behind

Centipedes -"Meandering Through" & "Moonlight Walk"

The materials, techniques and stages involved in creating this sculpture that brought the finished work together.

Moonlight Walk

'Meandering through' came from a desire to create a centipede type of creature. This entails having multiples of an object which I have been carrying around for years in the form of an old set of snooker balls as well as having multiples of teaspoon handles which were offcuts from another work that I made a long time ago.

Once the idea became a visual mentally if flowed, although as always there were technical elements to work out as the piece progressed.

One of the hardest elements of this piece was drilling a hole directly through the middle of an opaque sphere, and then working out the equator between these holes.

After the snooker balls ere drilled and the legs were attached and each piece slid onto the piano wire core nicely, the issue became spacing each segment evenly. This was surprisingly difficult to work out as covering up the visually aesthetic element of the piano wire was to be avoided. This is where some old copper pipe came to the rescue even though, once cut, each piece of copper pipe had to be stretched to an exact size.

There is something wonderful about the flexibility and curved nature of a multiply segmented creature and the flow it has when moving over uneven terrain.

'Moonlight Walk' was a follow on of creating a similar piece after coming across a bag of antique marbles which had the beauty of air bubbles in each marble and they seemed perfect for such a piece.

The title came from the way the light reacted through the clear glass.

Even though this piece started with a simple idea it showed me again how many steps are involved to achieve elegance. Although drilling a hole through the center of a clear sphere is much easier compared to an opaque object as you can adjust direction as needed.

Again the movement of multiple pieces on piano wire creates the wonderful ability to change how the piece sits and the curves that can be created.
